When Is the Best Time of the Year to Trim Your Trees?

Trimming your trees is a great way improve their health and appearance, but when should you do have this done? Many people think that the prime pruning season is in the spring or fall, but this usually isn’t the case. The best time to trim most trees is actually between November and March. Here are a few reasons why this is the case.

1. The Dormant Season

Deciduous trees that shed their leaves every fall are dormant during the winter, so their energy and resources will go toward healing from cuts rather than promoting new growth. This reduces the stress on the trees and ensures that they recover quickly.

2. Improved Visibility

Trimming a tree during late fall and winter also allows for better visibility. There are no leaves on the trees, so you’ll be able to see the framework of the branches and the overall shape of the tree. You’ll also be able to identify dead or diseased branches more easily.

3. Avoiding Disease and Infestation

Trimming a tree makes it more vulnerable to disease and insect infestation. This is obviously a problem during the spring and summer when insects are at their most active, but it’s less of a problem when most of them are dormant in autumn and winter.

4. Reduces ‘Bleeding’

Many trees “bleed” sap when someone cuts them. This doesn’t hurt the tree, but it is unsightly and makes the job a bit messier. Trimming a tree while it’s dormant in the winter reduces the amount of sap that flows from a cut tree, especially if you trim it late in the winter.

Trimming Trees in Other Seasons

While most trees do well when they’re trimmed during the winter, spring-flowering trees, such as dogwood or lilac, should be trimmed no later than two weeks after their flowers have bloomed in the late spring or early summer. You also need to remove any storm-damaged or dead branches when you see them, regardless of the season. Allowing dead branches to remain increases the stress of the tree and impedes new growth.

David came out and gave me a quote the same day that I called. His price was far more reasonable than any other quote and as a retiree on a fixed income, I greatly appreciated that. The day before he was scheduled to come out, he sent me a text saying he could be here a day earlier and on that day he sent me another text saying he could be here earlier than expected. His communication is exceptional and I was so grateful because the tree was dead, leaning towards the neighbors property and I was afraid it would fall at any time.

When he showed up, he was like a magician. He pulled in the driveway, donned all his gear, scaled the tree with a large chainsaw hanging from his toolbelt, limbs started falling left and right, and within minutes the tree was down. Absolutely fascinating to watch. His assistant anticipated every move and it was like a magic show. I was scared for him, he was so high in the tree and those falling limbs were so big but he is obviously a seasoned professional and it was totally awesome to watch him do the work.

Unquestionably, his work is the best in the business and he went beyond my expectations. I am very impressed with all of his work. He even took the time to cut the stump as low to the ground as possible without even asking. He is a true professional and I just can’t thank him enough. I don’t have to worry about that dead tree leaning over my neighbors property anymore and that, in and of itself, is priceless!

We agreed on a price which was very reasonable and set up a day for removal. He showed up earlier than expected which is great. We had a small area to drop 9 pines without disturbing other vegetation around and he did it. Perfect! Wasn't expecting him to do all he did but am very thankful. Received a day prior for 8 AM and they where right on time. If you need professional work done absolutely give Hangin Limbs a call. I would also add David answer phone call first time and I did not go to voicemail.
